AS KOREAN AS APPLE PIE

The aim of this trip is for students to discover and understand the importance of Korea's apple and persimmon orchards in the economy and in the culture.

Students work in the local harvest of Korean persimmons and apples and learn how to prepare the fruits in the traditional way. Students consult with experts about the history of Korea's orchards. They also consult traditional medical experts how persimmons and apples fit into traditional Korean medicine.

"For this Discovery Week, I went on a local trip learning about Korean culture involving persimmons, apples, and medicinal treatments. It was a unique aspect of our tradition, and I think being a Korean kid that goes to an international school makes it easy to forget that we also have our own rich, complex culture. It was great to converse with Koreans who live such a different life from mine. I’ve gained a new appreciation for my culture. It was a relatively new trip, so it had its hiccups, but overall it was a nice way to connect with my peers and the people."
